Nga hua a te whenua

A range of wines from New Zealand’s first ever Maori owned and operated wine company is now available in the UK.

Tohu wines – pronounced Tor-who and which means ‘signature’ in Maori – are produced in the Gisborne and Marlborough areas of the country’s North Island and claimed set to be the next big thing from New Zealand.

The five wines available are Tohu Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, Tohu Marlborough Pinot Noir, Tohu Gisborne Chardonnay, Tohu Gisborne Unoaked Chardonnay and Tohu Gisborne Reserve Chardonnay.

Company CEO James Wheeler says: "Traditional Maori values encourage us to work with the land to produce what it can at its best. We don’t see ourselves as landowners but rather as stewards, looking after the land and ocean for future generations. At Tohu we believe in sustainable farming and in sharing the benefits equally amongst our Maori Iwi [tribes]".

He added: "We call our wines ‘Our gift from the land’, or ‘Nga hua a te whenua’ as we would say back home".
